What Amazon KDP needs from you
Whatever tool writes the book, Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) asks for the same things when you publish an ebook:
- A manuscript file: KDP accepts EPUB and Word (DOCX) files for Kindle ebooks.
- A cover image for the ebook.
- Details for the listing: title, subtitle, author name, description, keywords and categories.
- An answer about AI: KDP asks whether your book's content is AI-generated when you publish it.
- The rights to publish: the content must be yours to sell.
A paperback also needs a print-ready interior PDF and a full cover (front, spine and back) sized to your page count.
How BookBud.ai gets a book ready for KDP
- The draft: for fiction, a setup wizard fills in title, genre, setting and an initial cast from a short idea, and chapters are written one at a time as you steer the story. For nonfiction, you refine a chapter outline and then draft section by section or run Generate Full Book. Nonfiction can use verified citations: BookBud searches OpenAlex before each section, cites only sources it actually found, and adds a linked Citations chapter.
- Editing: every section opens in a rich-text editor, so you can revise inside the project.
- The cover: generate one with AI style presets, or upload your own (a tall image around 2:3, such as 1600 x 2400 pixels).
- The files: export EPUB, PDF and Word, or Export All for one ZIP with every format and the cover. Every EPUB is checked with EPUBCheck, the validator the major ebook retailers use.
- The listing details: the Metadata CSV export holds the title, subtitle, author, description, keywords and BISAC category codes, ready to copy into KDP.
Two ways to get your book onto Amazon
Upload it to your own KDP account
Export the EPUB (or Word file), the cover and the Metadata CSV, then create the title in your own KDP account. You answer KDP's questions yourself, including the AI-content question, and you set your own price. This is the route to use if you want KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited, because KDP Select requires the ebook to be exclusive to Amazon.
Distribute to Amazon and other stores in one step
The "Distribute My Ebook" button sends your EPUB, PDF, cover and metadata to SelfPublishing.pro, which distributes the book to Amazon, Apple Books, Google Play, Kobo, Everand/Scribd, the eBookIt bookstore and the Ingram retail network as one bundle. There is no per-retailer opt-out, so a book enrolled in KDP Select cannot use this route. There is no upfront distribution fee for BookBud members, the ebook gets a free ISBN, and you keep 85% of net royalties.
Paperbacks
For a print edition, the "Send to DocToPrint" button sends your manuscript, title, author name and cover to DocToPrint.com. A watermarked preview of the print interior is free, and a one-time $19 unlocks the clean print-ready PDF for that book. KDP print also needs a full cover sized to the page count.
Before you press Publish on KDP
- Read and edit every chapter. AI drafts are a start, not a finished book.
- For nonfiction, check every claim; BookBud's citations list only sources it actually found, but you remain responsible for what the book says.
- Answer KDP's AI-content question accurately.
- Open the EPUB in Amazon's free Kindle Previewer or a reading app and read the first chapters on a phone-sized screen.
You can try the whole path on the free account: 25,000 credits are enough to create an outline and a cover and draft the first few chapters. See BookBud pricing.
